Pandita Ramabai Mukti Mission, Kedgaon: 12/02/08

The day before my brithday, Niru and I woke up at 4am in order to catch a 5:40am Indrayani Express Train to Pune. The gaurd thought I was running away so I had to take a few minutes to convince him that my intentions were totally noble and I had permission from all possible sources (teachers, warden, parents, local gaurdians, etc.) to go and so he finally said, "Okay, wait, I'll get you a taxi."

Once we got to the station, we bought our tickets and made it pretty obvious that we didn't have much clue of what we were doing (I think it was the first time I bought myself a long-distance train ticket) and then waited for about an hour...

We then proceeded to the train and boarded the wrong compartment! We sat ourselves in Cattle class (that's what Jonny calls it cause of the wooden seats) and after a while I thought it was best to reconfirm and showed my ticket to a lady in our compartment who told us we were in the wrong place (we had confirmed tickets and the cattle class is for general passengers) so then we got out and found our compartment which was completely empty and had much more comfortable seats (which we named sheep class). Our compartment was mostly empty and every time the TT came by, we were sleeping so our tickets were not even checked...

Once we got to Pune we had to look out for a girl called Rupa who was to take us to Kedgaon. (Mr. Barclay gave us her contact) On our train to Kedgaon (which took us an hour) was in Cattle class. In Kedgaon the Orphanage is only a three minute walk away so we walked there and were introduced to a lady called Mrs. Jacobs and then another lady who is the Social Worker at Mukti Mission took us around the whole place including Pandita Ramabai Mukti's Room and we were told a little about her. (She was really an amazing woman - she translated the whole Bible into marathi which was her mother tongue and founded Mukti Mission. Find out more.)

We spent the whole day there and at lunch met all the international volunteers (from the US, NZ and Australia) who were all REALLY sweet people. Lunch was good too, albeit a little bland for us cause it was made to suit the volunteers I guess.

And we bought a whole bunch of beautiful candles that the children in the special school make and also some bookmarks and cards...

At around 5:30pm we got a lift to Pune with a ex-hebron parent. And then had dinner at the Barclays' place with Miss Mangaldoss and Deepak and talked about old times and new... It was great fun!
